Originally known as Ringway Airport, Manchester Airport was opened for public passenger flights in June 1938. During the Second World War the airport was renamed RAF Ringway to signify its military purpose. Between 1975 and 1986 the airport's name was Manchester International Airport, before finally becoming Manchester Airport.

In addition to being a gateway to the rest of the World, the airport has a number of attractions for plane enthusiasts. The Aviation Viewing Park is one of the best opportunities for plane spotting and visitors are able to view both takeoff as well as landings.

Tours can be booked by visitors, for Concorde, the plane which was the flagship of the British Airways fleet. The last airliner which was built in the UK, the BAE Systems Avro RJX G-IRJX is also on display together with other rare planes including one of the only two remaining preserved Hawker Siddeley Trident 3B aircraft in the world.

Over 19.5 million passengers use Manchester Airport to fly to over 180 worldwide destinations each year. The airport is located 16km from the city centre and is easily accessible by car, taxi, bus or train. There are a number of hotels located at the airport including Copthorne Hotel which allows for swift travel to and from the airport as well as the opportunity to visit the exhibits and live planes.
